What does Poker have to do with it?
When California became a state in 1850, poker was already a staple of Gold Rush saloons. But across the country, states were starting to crack down on gambling, so legislators decided to pre-empt prohibition by writing into the brand-new state constitution that poker was a game of skill, not chance—an important distinction that still affects gambling laws today. Card clubs and poker rooms continued to flourish, and there are around 90 currently in operation in the state with annual revenues topping $1 billion annually.
And then there were horses…and lottery tickets
California wouldn't host casinos as we know them until almost a 150 years later, but before embracing the magic of slot machines, roulette, blackjack tables and everything in between, the state amended the constitution to legalize horse race wagering in 1933. About a half a century later, the state created the lottery system in 1984, starting with simple scratchers and expanding out into several multi-million dollar contests today that provide extra revenue to public education.

Around the same time, in the early in the 1980s, Native American tribes in California opened bingo halls that offered prize money, a precursor the glitzy casinos of today. And after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1987 that California couldn't prohibit gambling on tribal lands, the neon-lit floodgates opened and tribes across the state seized upon the opportunity to bring in massive revenue for their reservations.
That's a lot of slot machines!
Today California has 69 tribal casinos with over 70,000 combined slot machines and 2,000-plus table games, more than any other state in the country. Total revenue surpasses $7 billion annually—edging over combined revenue from casinos on the Las Vegas strip—a figure that's expected to grow, but it's not the end of California's gambling story.
